Brief Synopsis:
This edit turns American Horror Story season 1 into a movie about the Harmon family.

Intention:
I thought the season was very strong and would make a really fun condensed narrative. It is very stylishly shot so I thought it lent itself to the format.

Other Sources:
American Horror Story OST Seasons 1 and 3, Piano Horror Echoes, Nip/Tuck Piano Montages

Editing Details:
I cut narratives which didn’t further the plot of the Harmons or young Michael. I tried to keep the editing in the style of the show, which is very kinetic and jarring.

Cuts and Additions:

Here are whole plots excised:
– Violet at school, “scaring” classmate
– Hayden abortion, Ben’s trip to Boston
– First time Ben and Vivian have sex in show (so Rubber Man is her first in this edit)
– Home invasion
– Much of Moira as the young seductress though it’s there
– Trying to resell house is cut
– Chad and Patrick’s murder
– Amniocentesis
– Piggy piggy/Derek
– Beau was cut out due to so much of Larry’s story being cut
– Whole ‘Open House’ episode other than 1 scene
– Re-ordered so movie opens with Nora and Charles info from tour
– Rubber Man reveal is when he attacks Ben NOT before
– Chad and Patrick are cut
– Vivien getting committed is cut
– Alarm system install and Morris Chestnut are cut
– Billie Dean though we get her as a VO to explain the true nature of the anti-christ.

Brief Synopsis:
I have trimmed a bunch in the first and second acts and completely rescored the movie with the wonderful work of Goblin.

Intention:
I wanted to change the mood and feel of the movie, particularly the first half. It’s very much a jump scare/fake-out jump scare movie for a bit and then gets really interesting when we delve into the Further in my opinion. I wanted to reduce the jumps and change the music to make it feel more like a psychological thriller. Plus Goblin is dope, so I wanted to use their stuff.

Other Sources:
Multiple horror soundtracks: Zombi (DotD), Contamination, Suspiria, Buio Omega, Notturno and the “regular” Goblin record True Blood.

Editing Details:
I made the narrative trims I wanted to make first, then pored through all my Goblin stuff noting tracks that fit the vibe I was looking for. Goblin are fantastic at a lot of things but for this edit I was going for a feeling of dread. So I chose pieces that were generally not fast-paced (with some exception, of course) but more setting the mood of things being not right. I also was looking for pieces that kind of pulse and drive forward. I wanted the score to be very front and center (hence the volume levels) and drive the feeling of dread for this family. I also knew I wanted to repeat some tracks and motifs so that was in mind while I was going through the music, as well.

Cuts and Additions:
– Cut kids talking through cans
– Cut piano scare and baby on floor fake-out (obvious set-up)
– Cut conversation with Josh and Renai
– Cut Lorraine talking to Dalton (who’s sleep-talking) and seeing woman in the white dress (it’s repetitive and way too obvious when she finds Josh behind the door)
– Cut Dalton recounting the stuff with Josh (again, too obvious)
– Cut Lorraine telling Specs and Tucker about the night before. Specs and Tucker just found the video so they would logically invite Lorraine over there regardless
– Reordered scenes so Renai being fooled by the baby cries is intercut with Lorraine meeting with Specs and Tucker
– Cut Josh’s tooth falling out and him (Parker) talking to the Bride in Black
– Cut scene with cans. It’s a decent scene but I cut the earlier scene with the cans and the ghostly whispers audio and score were too deeply entrenched for me to make it sound good
– Cut some of Carl and Josh’s back and forth so we go straight from suspicion to attack (no dice)

Brief Synopsis:

I had three simple goals:
1. NO GOD
2. MORE DANCING
3. END MOVIE A COUPLE MINUTES EARLIER

Intention:
I loved the film and found it almost perfect for me but I was bothered by all of the overt religious talk and the last couple minutes of the film. I found the conversations shoehorned so I set out to remove them to make the characters more realistic, in my opinion. For the ending, I felt that the film should have concluded a couple minutes earlier, with a different character.

Editing Details:
I sought to make the characters speak more realistically and end the film sooner.

Cuts and Additions:
11:17 – Cut “not just the history of man…that’s the history of gods” – shoehorned in god reference, but what the hell does that logically even mean?
15:31 – Cut god/man talk – first off it’s too obvious Nathan is trying to put him off, secondly that’s not how scientists talk, thirdly his blatant misquote of Caleb makes him sound like a psychopath. I understand that he probably is but he would be smart enough to not come off like a megalomaniac.
59:05 – Added extended dance sequence (because Oscar Isaac dancing is wonderful and it makes his immediate reaction afterward make a lot more sense).
1:06:32 – Cut “all set for extinction” – I think the metaphor is great with ‘upright apes with crude language and tools’ and the last part is dark rather than the detached way he was speaking. Scientists do not look back on fossils with disdain in my opinion. Also cut Oppenheimer quote from Caleb since it is already obvious enough how he feels about Ava, I feel that quoting Oppenheimer quoting Sanskrit text is just too much.
1:07:00 Cut drunk Nathan continuing the Oppenheimer/Sanskrit quote – too on the nose for me. Although the man was a brilliant scientist it is a direct religious quote and I just don’t see it fitting with his character.
I left in the line “it’s Promethean” because that’s subtle enough and completely sounds like how drunk Nathan would talk (in my opinion).
1:37:49 – Cut Eva walking out into the world so that the film ends with Caleb

Brief Synopsis:
This is an edit of Game of Thrones Season 1 focused on Eddard Stark.

Intention:
To create a feature length narrative following Lord Eddard Stark becoming the Hand of the King. We don’t know what is going on with the Lannisters or what happened to Jon Arryn until the end of the second act.

Other Sources:
Game of Thrones Season 1 OST, Game of Thrones Season 3 OST
Editing Details:
Rickon is gone, Jon Snow is gone, Bran is gone, Tyrion is gone, nothing in Essos (no Dany) or the Wall. The focus is heavily on Ned here.

Cuts and Additions:
SCENE BLOCKING:Credit sequence over animated images of Robert killing Rhaegar Targaryen and the sacking of King’s Landing, ending with him and his Hand, Jon Arryn.
Jaime and Cersei discuss the death of the Hand.
Catelyn tells Ned that Jon Arryn has died.
The King arrives in the North, presents the offer. They feast in celebration. That night Ned and Cat receive the letter from Cat’s sister about the Lannisters, then Ned and the King leave for King’s Landing the next day.
Jaime Lannister welcomes Ned to the capital.
Small council meets.
Cersei and Joffrey discuss enemies.
Joffrey gives Sansa the necklace.
Ned talks to Arya about swordfighting.
The dancing master teaches her a thing or two.
30 MINUTE MARK
Ned learns of Jon Arryn’s last days from Pycelle and gets the book.
Littlefinger tells Ned about Ser Hugh and the armorer.
Ser Hugh refuses to talk to Ned’s captain. (I thought about cutting this part but I think it establishes the danger around these questions and cements Littlefinger on Ned’s good side, which is important later. It develops a web around the old Hand’s death with Varys, Littlefinger et al)
Ned meets Gendry.
Cersei issues Ned a word of warning.
Ser Hugh’s untimely end.
Varys trusts Ned and tells him of the Tears of Lys (spelling?)
Ned meets another bastard.
Jaime threatens Ned (Tyrion is gone so the motivation is now different. He’s been adversarial since they met and it should seem surprising. When we later learn that he is at the heart of the questions being asked it makes perfect sense (I hope!))
Syrio teaches Arya the water dance and about the one god, death. “Not today.”
Ned wakes up and King Robert forces an uneasy truce between Cersei and Ned.
Ned wants the girls out of King’s Landing. Sansa brings up hair color inadvertently…
Ned reads about the Baratheon line in the book.
The King goes on a boar hunt.
Ned confronts Cersei.
ONE HOUR MARK
Robert’s deathbed.
Renley proposes swift action.
Littlefinger assures Ned.
King Joffrey calls Ned to court.
Ned is betrayed.
The First Sword of Braavos does not run.
Cersei pleads for mercy.
Varys visits Ned in the dungeon.
The beheading of Ned Stark at the statue of Baleor
Yuren takes Arya with him. A glimmer of hope.
Short credits.
Mid-credits scene.
End credits.

The Man with Fire on his Face (Insidious Recut and Rescored)

Own the Source. To ensure the copyright owner receives compensation for their work, a faneditor must used an officially released source they purchased. Examples include: Blu-ray, DVD, and a downloadable copy through a site like iTunes, Amazon, or Google Play. Captures of streaming copies are not acceptable.

OWN. THE. SOURCE. Likewise for fanedit fans: to download a fanedit, please own an officially released copy of the film.

Brief Synopsis:
This is “Insidious” trimmed down to a taut 71 minutes and completely rescored using Disasterpeace’s phenomenal score from “It Follows.”

Intention:
I wanted to reduce some of the repetitive scares in the first act to get to the Man with Fire on His Face and the Further faster. I also wanted to rescore the film using the score from “It Follows” as it is brilliant and they work very well together.

Other Sources:
It Follows OST

Editing Details:
I wanted to cut down on the repetitive scares before we know what’s really going on. There are good scenes on their own but I like the flow much better if we find out about the titular character (of this edit, anyway) sooner and the original third act plays as basically the last half of the film. Then there was a lot of tightening up (including the last two minutes of the movie). I also rescored the whole thing using the great score from ‘It Follows.’

Cuts and Additions:
– Reworked opening credits, replaced score with “Title”
– Deleted breakfast scene
– Deleted first attic visit since it gets repeated by Dalton a couple minutes later
– Enhanced child scream to make sense with their reaction
– Replaced score with “Heels” for them running upstairs and talking to Josh
– Cut Josh and Renai joking around before bed
– Replaced score of Renai seeing box with an excerpt of “Heels”
– Replaced music underneath doctor explaining coma with “Jay”
– Cut nurse explaining stuff to Josh and Renai – we just got it from the doctor
– Cut baby monitor voices scene
– Cut conversation with Foster about award to focus on talking about Dalton
– Cut Josh and Renai conversation about baby monitor voices – moved the knocking sound up so that it is what scares Foster under the covers
– Cut Josh downstairs with the poker while the alarm goes off – scene ends after he says there’s nobody in the house
– Cut Josh calling wife from school – used flashbacks as dream sequences after the night before
– Cut the nurse’s uplifting conversation so the day begins with Renai changing linen and discovering the bloody handprint
– Cut part of the conversation in front of the house where she’s complaining about him working late
– Changed music behind what is now Josh’s first flashback/dream to “Anyone”
– Changed music to “Anyone” when demon is walking outside Renai’s door and she wants to move
– Changed music when they move to “Company”
– Record skip at 19:40 now changes to “Detroit” while Renai is out taking the trash and first sees the demon kid
– Added “Heels” theme when demon kid jumps out of Narnia
– Cut Lorraine explaining her dream so it remains more mysterious (go right from her saying this is real to seeing demon)
– Changed music to “Inquiry” when they run upstairs and discover Dalton in the middle of a ransacked room
– Added “Heels” theme when Tucker looks through the Viewfinder
– Replaced music when Elise meets Dalton with “Greg”
– Trimmed a little of the buildup to the lights turning on
– Cut a bunch of Elise’s speech (stuff about easing them into it and how it’s only what she believes/might contradict diagnosis, etc) – changed music underneath to “Detritus”
– Cut some of Elise’s explanation about the demon – repetitive
– Cut Josh being staunchly against Elise’s help since he changes his mind 20 seconds later
– Changed music to “Playpen” under the start of séance and “Father” leading up to and when sh,t hits the fan
– Changed music to “Linger” when Josh learns of his past and prepares to go into the Further
– Changed music to “Heels” when he first sees something in ether
– Changed music to Father when the big guy first shows up
– Changed music to “Pool” when Josh finds Dalton
– Left “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” at the end. This is the first time you hear it in my end, which makes is creepier in my opinion
– Changed music to “Heels” after they meet close up
– Changed music to “Linger” as Josh, well, lingers in the Further
– Cut Specs and Tucker talking about their future book
– Cut ending so after Elise takes Josh’s photo we see the photo flash and then the lady attacking. No Rose Byrne running around for five minutes or showing Josh kill Elise. It’s tighter and still very clear in my opinion

Brief Synopsis:
Will Smith has no wife and son. The president has no wife. Some silly moments with Goldblum and his ex are cut. Randy Quaid has no family. The movie has no Randy Quaid.

Intention:
I love the late 90s cheese and action in Independence Day but the movie should definitely not be two and a half hours. A lot of scenes with Vivica Fox and the First Lady drag in the middle of good action set pieces. The movie grinds to a halt every time Randy Quaid says a “joke.” I wanted to focus on the characters core to the story and remove the bloat.

Other Sources:
Independence Day OST

Editing Approach:
My approach was to completely remove the family subplots that slowed down the story in my opinion. All Vivica Fox and her son, the First Lady, Randy Quaid’s alcoholism and abduction story (all of Randy Quaid, actually), Randy Quaid’s family and some of the stuff with Goldblum and his ex (the night they get drunk, mostly).

Cuts and Additions:
Cut president talking to wife on phone
Cut president and advisor talking about campaign before SOD calls
Cut David’s (Jeff Goldblum) line about Styrofoam cups
Cut Imperial Valley scene with Russell (Randy Quaid) and his kids
Cut White House Communications Director talking before going in and seeing the president
Cut “there’s no shame in hiding” and “I’ve got to call my mother”
Cut Russell diner scene
Cut Russell’s family out of the sequence where the disc ships move into place
Cut Steven (Will Smith)/Vivica Fox talking about the aliens
Cut Steven/Vivica Fox goodbye scene
Cut scene of president talking to wife on the phone
Cut 1st scene of David and his dad in the car
Cut scene of Russell’s kids watching him on tv
Cut Russell Case scene
Cut Steven talking about his girlfriend to fellow soldier
Cut Vivica Fox strip club scene
Cut “yeah…all cable men can, pops” since I cut the scene where he gives him crap for being a cable repair man
Cut dialogue about David punching president last time he saw him – not that relevant, safe to assume president is standoffish because he’s in a crisis and that’s the ex-husband of his trusted advisor
Cut president’s wife getting evacuated
Cut Vivica Fox scene in her car
Cut David’s boss trying to call his therapist in the Hamptons
Trimmed some of Vivica Fox’s stripper friend on the roof so she’s not a focus
Cut Steven’s wife, dog and son running from the fire
Cut scene with Russell and his family in the camper driving
Cut scene with President in the plane
Cut Vivica Fox and son in the aftermath
Cut Vivica Fox finding a car
Cut David’s dad talking to his ex-wife on plane
Trimmed scientist dialogue about not getting out much
Cut scientist “freakshow” line and trimmed his “humor” a bit
Cut White House staff squabbling over Area 51 existence
Cut Steven asking about El Toro
Cut Vivica and co by the fire
Cut “let’s nuke the bastards” line – stronger if president just says “nuke ‘em” and the scene ends
Cut scene of David and ex drinking on plane
Cut Steven stealing chopper and reuniting with wife
Cut president talking to his dying wife in hospital
Cut David drunk and his dad talking to him about faith
Cut Steven’s family out of Area 51
Cut “I gave it a cold” line since I cut David drunkenly figuring out the virus plan from his dad talking about a cold
Cut SOD referencing President’s dead wife
Cut Russell at Area 51 talking about his desire for revenge
Cut David’s ex not wanting him to go up
Cut Steven’s wedding
Cut Russell’s family during the president’s speech (left Randy in the first shot of group and shot at end because there are a bunch of random pilots)
Cut Russell saying goodbye to family
Cut Steven saying goodbye to family
Cut most of David and his dad saying goodbye
Left some shots of Russell piloting, since they focused on the president and another random pilot, too. I cut his over the top line about revenge, though. It doesn’t feel like “who the hell is that guy” just that they’re following the president and a couple of pilots they showed during his speech
Cut David’s dad leading prayer with disgraced ex-SOD
Cut all shots of Vivica Fox after ship is blown up
Cut celebration so that movie ends with David and Steven walking up and being picked up (no family celebrations)

Natural Born Killers – The Tarantino Cut

Own the Source. To ensure the copyright owner receives compensation for their work, a faneditor must used an officially released source they purchased. OWN. THE. SOURCE. Likewise for fanedit fans: to download a fanedit, please own an officially released copy of the film.
UPDATE: Working on a new version with non-QT music that is in the style of the stuff he chooses, sort of my idea of a ‘what if’ scenario (as of summer 2016)
Brief Synopsis:
This is Natural Born Killers edited as closely as possible to Quentin Tarantino’s script. All of the music has been replaced with pieces from previous Tarantino films.

Intention:
To remove as much over-the-top heavy handed Oliver Stone stuff. The lighting shifts, wildlife shots, random cuts to demons and cartoons, his infatuation with drugs and Native American culture, etc. Then I wanted to reorder things and remove everything to follow QT’s script as much as possible. I chose music from other Tarantino films to give the raw pop culture feel to it.

Additional Notes:
Two deleted scenes added back in as they were scripted (Hun Brothers interview and Mickey’s trial in court). They are SD so there is a quality dropoff but the intent was to follow the script.

Other Sources:
Title cards were pulled from Kill Bill Vol. 1
Soundtrack is from Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2, Death Proof, Inglorious Basterds and Jackie Brown.

Editing Details:
I followed the script scene by scene, which worked surprisingly well. Most of the scripted scenes were in the movie, along with an additional hour of Oliver Stone making sure we really understand that the media is bad and it’s our fault. The only real deviation to the strategy was that in the script, M&M’s arrest plays on Wayne Gale’s show and there is no footage of that. So I created a montage with the opening credits so that I could have snippets of that scene. Since the movie is now sorta non-linear, it works fine I think.

Cuts and Additions:
– Added new title sequence and credits (music is “Stuck in the Middle with You”, used some title cards from Kill Bill)
– Removed original intro with wildlife shots
– Removed black and white shot of guy reading “666 death newspaper” and disappearing (guardian angel)
– Changed music Mallory puts on to Joe Tex – I Got Ya
– Cut scorpion getting run over
– Cut all of the punches after the first
– Changed record change to “Misirlou”
– Cut bullet hanging in mid-air before hitting cook in the face
– Cut end dancing scene and lighting change
– REORDER – moved Scagnetti/Warden meeting to right here
– Changed music during Scagnetti/Warden meeting to “Down in Mexico”
– Added flashbacks to Mickey and Mallory killing her family after Warden mentions it (added Quincy Jones’ Ironside Excerpt as music for it)
– Removed part about Scagnetti hating the media – we get the theme already
– Removed bits of Mickey/Wayne Gale pre-interview to more closely match the script and changed music to Ennio Morricone – “Paranoia Prima”
– REORDER – moved Mickey letter scene right after pre-interview (changed music to Link Wray and his Wraymen – Rumble)
– REORDER – moved Wayne going through 1st American Maniacs episode with crew to take the place of scripted scene where Wayne tells them to cut up the 1st episode to make the 2nd
Removed lines about how stupid the viewing public is and that this is junk for the brains ( we get it)
– REORDER – moved all of the 1st show and footage from the 2nd show intercut with Wayne talking to crew. Changed theme song to Billy Preston “Slaughter”
– ADDED – Hun Bros scene, trimmed a couple lines to match script
– ADDED – Courtroom scene – regrettably had to cut some of it. It’s all as scripted but that damn circus music is embedded DEEP on the audio track of this deleted scene. I rebuilt the audio for the stabbing scene completely and trimmed some of the build up because of the music. I hate that circus music and it doesn’t feel like the rest of the film now at all. The best bits are still there in my opinion, though.
– REORDER – moved pre-interview Mickey and Wayne getting ready to after they’re looking at footage for the show. Changed music to Charles Bernstein/RZA “Crane/White Lightning”
Cut Wayne hugging prisoner – too over the top and not in the script
– REORDER – moved Scagnetti talking to Mallory in private to after pre-interview stuff. Cut him bribing guards but left the rest of the conversation intact as it more or less captures the essence of the script (changed music to Bernard Hermann – “Twisted Nerve” and then the Green Hornet theme once the fighting starts.
– Cut a lot from the beginning of the Mickey/Wayne interview. The stuff about god, demons and the Indian. What’s left is the best parts and best exemplify the tone of the interview in the script (IMO)
– Changed music to Ennio Morricone – “A Silhouette of Doom” – pretty radical departure but I love how the crescendos and decrescendos play behind what Mickey is saying.
– Changed music under warden getting riot call and Mickey telling a joke. It’s now Louis Bacalov – “The Grand Duel” which turns into Hotei Tomoyasu – “Battle Without Honor or Humanity” when Mickey finishes his joke
– Changed music under beginning of riot as Mickey and co. make their way through the hall to David Bowie “Cat People”
– Changed music for scene where Mickey and Mallory reunite to Elliot Easton’s Tiki Gods – “Monte Carlo Nights”
– Changed music when Warden realizes full scope of riot to Bullwinkle Pt. 2
– Changed green lighting to black and white for scene where they prepare to break out of prison. I hate that obnoxious green lighting so much.
– Changed music for final standoff in front of the door to George Baker “Little Green Bag”
– Cut a lot of dialogue from the final scene, to remove references to the Indian, demon and – Oliver Stone trying to really let us know that we are the media and it is our fault for obsessing with them. I think that’s clear already. Changed music to Ennio Morricone “Il Tramonto”
– End credits are April March “Chick Habit” and Smith “Baby It’s You” which are separated by the knob turning sound effect from the Misirlou/Jungle Boogie transition from Pulp Fiction
– REMOVED COMPLETELY – Mickey and Mallory sitcom style scenes with parents, Mickey and Mallory meeting, all of the stuff with the Indian, Mickey and Mallory wedding scene, Mickey proposing a threesome, Mallory cheating on Mickey, Scagnetti murdering a hooker, as many of the weird black and white slo-mo cuts as possible, all of the demon and cartoon shots, the guardian angel and more probably.
